What is a memory foam mattress?
Sleep science has been studied for centuries, but memory foam is only a recent advancement that was discovered in the 1960’s while developing seats for NASA’s airplanes. It has been revolutionary to the bedding industry, now commanding over 48% of the mattress market.
Originally called temper foam, memory foam is made from a substance called viscoelastic. This name is derived from its two fundamental concepts: viscosity and elasticity. Viscosity describes the way the material moves slowly in response to pressure (for example, honey is a viscous substance that you can see when it moves slowly as you pour it). Elasticity describes how something can stretch and change shape, returning unaltered to its original form. Memory foam responds to the heat and pressure from your body by contouring to the shape of your body and evenly distributing your body weight. Once you remove the pressure, it returns back to its original shape. Both these features make memory foam mattresses a product that is highly energy absorbent and soft to sleep on.
The benefits of memory foam
- Pain Relief
One of the biggest reasons memory foam became so popular so quickly is from its ability to deliver pain relief. It stimulates the feeling of sleeping on a cloud, so people with back pain or conditions like arthritis find unparalleled relaxation from the relief, support, and contouring the mattress delivers.
- Pressure Points Relief
The support provided by memory foam comes in such a way that it provides pressure relief from areas like your hips, back, and shoulders that would otherwise be carrying the pressure from your body weight. Not sure what a pressure point is? If you lie on your back or side on the hard ground, you will soon feel the areas that are carrying most of your weight in that position. Memory foam, however, adjusts to your body and contours it to provide proper support and comfort to those areas, relieving the pressure and any pain caused by it.
- Back Support and Spine Alignment
Having a bed that provides support and alignment to your back is critical for a good night’s sleep! If you’ve ever woken up and felt like your back or neck was ‘out’, then you will know why. The high density of memory foam mattresses will support the natural and proper alignment of your back and neck, giving you a good night’s sleep and helping support your back health.
If spine alignment is an issue for you and the main reason you are looking at memory foam mattresses, make sure the density of the memory foam is high so that it will provide the medium/firm support necessary to keep you in alignment properly.
- Allergy-Friendly
While not completely hypoallergenic, the high density of the mattress foam makes it difficult for mold, dust, dust mites, or other allergens to get into the mattress. Unlike memory foam, most other mattresses have air pockets inside them where moisture and air circulation can make an ideal home and breeding ground for dust mites. There is also no wool or feathers used in a memory foam mattress, making it an ideal mattress for allergy sufferers.
- Motion Isolation
You’ve probably seen the commercials where a glass of red wine sits on one side of the mattress while someone jumps onto the other side of the mattress and the glass of wine miraculously doesn’t spill. That miracle comes from the motion absorbancy of memory foam.
Memory foam mattresses are popular for couples that struggle with partner disturbance through the night for this reason. Memory foam is resistant to motion transfer, meaning there is no partner disturbance caused by getting up through the night or tossing and turning. The motion from one side of the bed is not transferred through the mattress.
- Durability
The elasticity of memory foam and the way it bounces back to its original shape means that it lasts a lot longer than an average mattress. An average mattress has the expected lifespan of 8-10 years, while memory foam mattresses can sometimes last a lot longer.
- Flexible for all sleeping types
The way the memory foam mattresses can support all types of body weights, pressure points, and sleep needs make it an extremely flexible option for all types of sleepers. In addition to the way the mattresses reduce partner disturbance, this makes it an ideal mattress for couples with opposing sleep needs and preferences.
- Comfort
Sleeping on a memory foam mattress is often described as the feeling of sleeping on a cloud. The mattress contours and aligns itself with your body, reducing pressure and relieving main from pressure on your back, neck and hips.
